Judaism is normally considered to be a non-ascetic culture. This is especially true when one speaks about marital discourse and celibacy in Judaism. The interpretation of Gen. 1:28 as the commandment strictly required for all religious Jews was taken for granted in Rabbinic culture. In this context the interpretation of Num. 12:1, from Targums and further on till Maimonides, as a story of Moses' celibacy and abstinence is rather paradoxical. In the paper several stories of Moses' celibacy are examined: Sifre on Numbers, 99:2 (and it's variations), Talmud Bavli, Shabbath 87a (and it's variations, also in comparison with Aphrahat's Demonstration XVIII), Maimonides, Mishneh Torah: The Book of Knowledge 1:7:6, and Yalkut Reubeni (on Exod. 3.5).
